Forty-two years ago this week, Dolly Parton had the No. 1 song on the country chart, the classic “I Will Always Love You.” She had written it as a farewell to her mentor, Porter Wagoner, after ending their working relationship.
Elvis Presley liked the song so much, he wanted to do his own version. Parton was elated, until his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, told her that she would have to sign over half of the publishing rights. She refused, and the song went largely unknown outside of country music circles.
It doesn’t end there, of course. Whitney Houston later did a haunting pop version for her movie debut, “The Bodyguard,” in 1992 … it was a worldwide smash, and spent a then-record 14 weeks at No. 1 in the U.S. It made Parton a load of money in royalties.
The moral of the story? Stand up for yourself, trust your instincts, don’t ever be bullied. It serves as a lesson of perseverance for everyone in the music industry, be they a big-name artist like Kesha or a newcomer trying to make a name for themselves.
Thank you, Dolly.
