“The Midnight Special,” created and produced by Burt Sugarman, debuted as a regular series on NBC, immediately following the Friday night edition of “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.” Wolfman Jack served as the announcer, and the theme song was performed by Johnny Rivers. The first show was hosted by Helen Reddy, with guests Tina Turner, Curtis Mayfield, Don McLean, The Byrds and George Carlin.
