One of my favorite recents. This track is so damn fun.

And really, the whole album is just awesome. I suggest clicking through to check out the entire thing — all available as a free download.

I don’t tell many people about Ari Hoenig (drummer) and his trios, quartets, bands, etc., because I like to grab a great seat at his shows. Most recently, it had been a year since I last saw him perform. Judging by the size of the crowd and the subtle anticipation in their whispers as everyone waited for Ari to take the stage, I’d say he’s finally reached superstar status. Check him out playing “Giant Steps” along with the formidable Jean Michel Pilc on piano.

It’s David Bowie’s birthday today (Jan. 8). I was on the phone with his manager yesterday and all I’m going to divulge about that is, listening to Bowie’s music is a far more enjoyable experience. Happy birthday, Ziggy Vanilli.

I think it’s important to understand jazz improvisation and interpretation … also really important to know that when it comes to saxophone and bop, you simply can’t mess with Trane. But, if you compare Ari & Jean Michel’s version above with the traditional rendition below, hopefully you’ll see why jazz and soul excite me so much … as well as the remix.
