Thomas Dolby knows more about music and technology than just about anyone.

He was there when MTV exploded in 1982, becoming a star in his own right thanks to the electro-pop hits “She Blinded Me With Science” and “Hyperactive!” and his accompanying music videos.

When the hits dried up and he became disillusioned with the music grind, he did scores for film and video games; his company Headspace developed a downloadable file format (the RMF file extension), and he was a pioneer in developing ringtones.

These days, he’s the Homewood Professor of the Arts at Johns Hopkins University, where he’s helping to create an incubator for technology in the arts.

Now he can add “author” to his résumé. His first memoir, “The Speed of Sound: Breaking the Barriers Between Music and Technology” (Flatiron Books), is one of this week’s top music book releases, and it’s everything you would expect: fun and enlightening.

Late last week, Rolling Stone published an excerpt: “Inside Michael Jackson’s Mansion: Thomas Dolby Recalls Surreal Visit.”

Read on.
