Your Music Book Store (March 8 and Beyond)
Bob Dylan didn’t discover Woodstock, but he did help put that hamlet in New York’s Catskills on the map.
The rock legend had a second home there and lived in anonymity until his July 1966 motorcycle crash brought him unwanted attention and sent him into an eight-year self-exile from touring. It was during that time that he holed up with The Hawks (who would become The Band) at Big Pink and worked on demos that became classics, like “I Shall Be Released,” “The Mighty Quinn” and “Crash on the Levee (Down in the Flood).”
Dylan’s Shangri-La attracted many other artists seeking a musical retreat – from George Harrison to Todd Rundgren.
In his new book, “Small Town Talk: Bob Dylan, The Band, Van Morrison, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Friends in the Wild Years of Woodstock,” writer Barney Hoskyns digs deep into Woodstock’s history as an art and music haven. At the center of the story is Dylan’s manager, Albert Grossman, who lured him to upstate New York. It was in the Woodstock area that Grossman established the Bearsville Recording Studio and founded Bearsville Records.
