There are unsung heroes (overlooked singers) and there are unstrung heroes (equally overlooked guitarists).

Author Pete Braidis has sought to rectify these rock-history omissions by unleashing “Unstrung Heroes: Fifty Guitar Greats You Should Know” (Schiffer Publishing, June 28). He interviewed 50 guitarists he feels deserve more recognition for their work, such as Rik Emmett of Triumph, Davey Johnstone of Elton John’s band, Pat Travers, Howard E. Scott of War, Randy Jackson of Zebra, Bruce Cockburn, Vicki Peterson of the Bangles and loads more.

Pause & Play turns the tables by interviewing the New Jersey resident, who’s also a part-time teacher and works for the Philadelphia Phillies.

P&P: We know all the guitar gods, but personally who do you think is the most overlooked guitarist – past and present?

Braidis: “I think to a large degree, everyone in my book is overlooked or underappreciated, but I can say my main inspiration for the book was the late Terry Kath of Chicago. Good God, was this guy the best to ever strap on a guitar.

“His passion, his tone, his feel, his sense of when to play nasty, when to jam till his fingers bled or when to play subtle chords on a brilliant pop song – it was all there. Plus, he sang like a white Ray Charles.

“Play ‘Poem 58’ on ‘Chicago Transit Authority’ or ‘Sing a Mean Tune, Kid’ on ‘Chicago III’ and try not have your jaw drop. There’s also loads of hidden gems like the hard rock of ‘Hideaway’ on ‘Chicago VIII’ or ‘Oh Thank You, Great Spirit’ from the same album. Also, on ‘Chicago VII’ there’s ‘Song of the Evergreens.’ I could go on and on.

“The fact that the average drunken guy in a bar arguing with his friend about the best guitarist and choosing such cliched names as Clapton, Page, Van Halen, Hendrix, etc., drives me nuts because yeah, those guys are all legends but there’s sooooo much more out there … just listen to it! If I walked up and said, ‘Terry Kath is better than all of them,’ they’d say, ‘Who?'”

P&P: How would you sum up your experience writing your first book?

Braidis: “I’ve written for newspapers and magazines and written blogs and songs but never a book which I always wanted to do. Now, I have. It was nearly two years of hard work while working two jobs as well.

“It came out beautifully and I’m proud of it and if you’re a true music fan, there’s no way you won’t be thrilled to read interviews with Davey Johnstone of Elton John, Steve Hackett of Genesis, Richie Furay of Buffalo Springfield and Poco, Howard E. Scott of War, Rik Emmett of Triumph, Vicki Peterson of the Bangles, Eric Bazilian of the Hooters and so many others.

“It’s a 305-page hardbound book with gorgeous detail and design.

“The work was difficult and I wrote all the biographies and interviews by myself and also acquired all the photos on my own from the artists. So much of this took a long time because I realized rather quickly I was on the guitar player’s times … not mine!”

P&P: What are you working on next?

Braidis: “Funny you ask, but I’m working on Volume 2 of ‘Unstrung Heroes’ now. I’ve got about 25 players but I’m not going for 50 this time!

“There’s more cool players such as Steve Bartek (Oingo Boingo and conductor of all Danny Elfman’s scores for films), Richard Fortus of Guns N’ Roses, Marty Lee Hoenes of Donnie Iris & the Cruisers, Gary Sanford of Joe Jackson and so on.

“Next, I plan to write a book about my hilarious (and true) experiences owning a video store for 13 years, and believe me it will be damn funny. A children’s book would be a thing I’d like to do down the line as well as a history of the USFL, but that all may be a pipe-dream!”

Read on for this week’s new music books and more …
