Every decade has its boy-band madness: One Direction and 5 Seconds of Summer in the 2000s; Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC in the ’90s; New Kids on the Block and New Edition in the ’80s.
What about the ’70s? The Jackson 5 and the Osmonds racked up hit after hit in the United States, but on the other side of the Atlantic, the U.K. had Rollermania … the Bay City Rollers. They made it big in the U.S., too, but on a smaller scale, scoring a No. 1 with their first hit (“Saturday Night”) and five more Top 40 hits.
With “When the Screaming Stops: The Dark History of Pop’s First Boy Band,” writer Simon Spence traces the band’s big rise and massive fall and their infamous battles with an overbearing manager, Tam Paton, and their former label (Arista) over unpaid royalties.
In an interview with the Daily Mail last year, Les McKeown said: “Tam was a talented PR man, but a manipulative, evil b*****d.’ … I was afraid of him. I mean, he was a big guy.”
It’s just of many new and upcoming music book releases. Read on.
