Jazz, it seems, has just as many detractors as it has devoted followers. They just don’t “get it.”

Music scholar Ted Gioia makes a highly admirable attempt to help those detractors learn “How to Listen to Jazz.”

“Listening, not jargon, is the path into the heart of music. And if we listen at a deep enough level, we enter into the magic of the song – no degree or formal credential is required,” Gioia writes in this week’s most anticipated new music book.

He suggests listeners “seek out and listen to lesser-skilled musicians” to better understand the genre’s greats. On YouTube, you can find a student band trumpeter struggling with a difficult piece, then you turn to Miles Davis and watch him play every note flawlessly. Of Davis, he writes, “no musician of his generation did a better job of blending with the rest of the group, of creating holistic statements that integrated the contributions of every member of the ensemble, many of them almost as assertive and demonstrative as their boss.”

Gioia also gives a mini-history of jazz and how it has evolved since the early 1900s and provides a list of 150 contemporary jazz musicians “who deserve your attention.”
