In “Toni Tennille: A Memoir,” the 75-year-old singer reveals that her and Daryl “The Captain” Dragon didn’t get married on Valentine’s Day 1975; their label, A&M Records, just made it up for publicity’s sake.

“So it wasn’t until fans began mentioning it in their letters that we learned our record label had ‘married’ us,” Tennille writes.

They got married for real a few months later in a small chapel at the Silver Queen Saloon in Virginia City, Nev., in front of a justice of the peace and two strangers. But love didn’t keep them together after all. From there on out, she writes, it was a loveless marriage, in spite of her efforts to keep the couple together.

“After our somewhat odd but entirely legal wedding ceremony, I didn’t feel any closer to my new husband than I had before. I wonder how many other new brides … felt the same way as they waited for the romantic fairy tale, which had been promised to us since girlhood, to start.”

They had great musical chemistry, as evidenced by their slew of hits, but after much soul-searching, she filed for divorce in 2014.
