Terri Hendrix "The Spiritual Kind" (producer: Lloyd Maines; Hear here) (Wilory, Aug. 28, 2007)

  |     |

BTW: For "The Spiritual Kind," her ninth album, Hendrix's main goal "was to get these songs out of my head and heart and into the ears of my fans," she tells P&P. "The reason why I chose 'The Spiritual Kind' as the title track is because this batch of songs all have spiritual ties. And we are all spiritual beings going through a human experience.

"These days, there's lots happening politically. I wrote about those divisions in 'Things Change' and 'Jim Thorpe's Blue's,' but the main center of my record would be 'Acre of Land,' which is about inner strength. I wanted to bring forth a positive message to my longtime fans. The music's more acoustic and down home which is more representative of what we do live. And that was another goal."

Hendrix started her own label, Wilory, in 1996 and is still going strong in 2007. The only down side to taking the DIY route, she says, "is I can't fire myself. On a serious side, I'm pretty lucky. These past few months, my fans have been pre-ordering my new CD off my Web site. They call themselves 'lifelong fans' and you know ... that's about the best compliment I can ever hope to receive in my line of work."

Evelyn "Champagne" King "Open Book" (her first album in 10 years; producer: Preston Glass) (RNB Entertainment Group/Jaggo/ Fontana, Aug. 28, 2007)

BTW: For "Open Book," her first album in more than a decade, Evelyn "Champagne" King tells P&P she aimed "to keep my audience's ears tuned to songs of joy, love, happiness, and let them know we all have pain. To sum it up, I love being onstage watching my fans dance and sing along to my songs. I must continue to show that I'm a trouper here to sing." Click here for a full P&P interview.

Kula Shaker "StrangeFolk" (group's first album since 1999; producer: Tchad Blake; Hear here; Read here) (U.K. - StrangeFolk, Aug. 27, 2007)
Last Goodnight, The "Poison Kiss" (producers: Jeff Blue, DJ Lethal, La Coka Nostra; first single: "Pictures of You"; Hear here; See here) (Capitol, Aug. 28, 2007)

BTW: Kurtis John, The Last Goodnight's lead singer, says the band had a simple philosophy when it approached its major-label debut. "When you hear great musicians, it makes you appreciate how great they play, but when you hear a great song, it makes you appreciate how great you can become," he tells P&P. "Great songs have always been the shadow following me around, showing me what life is all about. I wanted to make music that could do the same for others as music has done for me. Songs you can relate to no matter who you are because their honest and from the soul; songs that are the farthest from fabrications.

"I wanted the album to be rhythmic, soulful, and desperate all in one. Music can be the beginning of forever. My goal was to make something timeless; timeless for myself and for everyone else. I feel like I'm the luckiest person on Earth to have been given this chance and opportunity. I've got one life to live and this is how I've always dreamed of living it. Enjoy the 'Poison Kiss.' "

As for working with A&R exec/producer Jeff Blue (Linkin Park, KoRn), John nearly doesn't know where to begin, but he gives it a try: "Jeff Blue is one of the most passionate, driven, and talented people I've ever met in and out of the music industry. He shoots very straight. If the cake isn't good without frosting, he's not going to waste neither his time nor yours putting any on.

"Jeff and I started working together three years ago after he saw us play at the Whiskey in Los Angeles. We'd work on songs over the phone, through e-mail, and smoke signals if we could have. Soon enough, my band mates and I made our way to Los Angeles where I ended up living in Jeff's Hollywood Hills Estate for over two years. We worked on over 120 songs to get the 'Poison Kiss' catalog of 12. Jeff's ear for music is brilliant. If he's not hearing it at first, make no mistake, he may never hear it and your song is probably worth shit but at the end of the day, he pulled things out of me I never thought anyone including myself could.

"He is a walking iPod. He knows every lyric, hook, and drum fill from today's Top 40 back to when cavemen use to rock out. He believed in us and in my voice when no one else would even take the time to listen. Then we shopped a demo and were turned down by almost every major record label and still he believed that they were the ones with deaf ears. We had the time of our lives recording this record with him and it's been an honor and privilege to have him as producer, A&R, and founder of The Last Goodnight."
