| Landon Pigg | "LP" (producers: Clif Magness, Dan Brodbeck, Paul Ebersold; Hear here; Read here) | (RCA, July 25, 2006) |
BTW: Pigg has been there and done that. "Acoustic guitar, coffee shop, and singer songwriter were all terms that couldn't have sounded any grosser to me at the time," he tells P&P. "I had lived in that world for so long - espresso machines grinding during the quiet parts of the feeble performance." But his debut album "was like a boat, like a chance to get off the island and explore some other areas that I had been wondering about. I was really excited about recording something that I could blast on the stereo and 'feel' something."
That something included working with such top-flight producers as Magness, Brodbeck and Ebersold. "We have all made such great teams in our own little way," Pigg says. "I have been a two-man band for the last two and a half years, but the second member of the band has been a revolving door. It's a blast working with just one other person at a time. It's kinda like playing a game of pool, one person against one person, rather than doubles. The former is so much more fun 'cause you don't have to wait as long before get another chance to shoot."
What better way to be introduced to the world than getting the coveted Free Download Single of the Week on iTunes with "Can't Let Go."
"I love it (not to be confused with the McDonald's slogan)," Pigg says, "but really, I was posted just up and to the left of Franz Ferdinand. That just makes me feel happy ... and kinda like, a real artist or something. I just asked someone about how it affected the awareness of my music, and I heard that I get 50 more friend requests a day on MySpace since it was the free download of the week. So at least I know people heard it. I like that a lot. A real lot."
| Pimp C | "Pimpalation" (guests: Mike Jones, Paul Wall, Bun B, Jagged Edge, etc.) | (Rap-A-Lot, July 25, 2006) |
| Pure Reason Revolution | "The Dark Third" (released in its native U.K. in April; producer: Paul Northfield; Hear here; Read here) | (Columbia/RED, July 25, 2006) |
BTW: For "The Dark Third," Pure Reason Revolution's Jon Courtney (vocals, guitars, synthesizer) tells P&P that "as a band we're fascinated with the questions raised about the origins and meanings of dreams. By the time we die, we'll have spent more than six years of our lives dreaming and a third of our lives asleep. It's kinda a concept album that investigates the supposedly sharp boundary between dreaming and wakefulness. And that perhaps the two states aren't actually so very different!(?)."
Courtney says the band is flattered with the media-driven comparisons to Pink Floyd and the Beach Boys. "They're both bands we very much admire and take vast chunks of inspiration from," he says. "Though while we get comparisons to quite a few '60s, '70s acts, we take inspiration from a varied cross-section of music. We aren't by any means trying to just recreate/do a rehash/pastiche of something that's already been. We strive to make now sounding records; aiming to create a new sound that foremost excites us and hopefully other people."
Now, about that name: "We'd wandered the gloaming for what felt like days," Courtney says. "The face of the evening was stained by red clouds and wounded by illumination ... a mist created nebulous shapes that formed words ... only three were recognizable: an Angel flew down grabbing the first; 'Pure' and then darted into the sublime skies ... an evil imp scampered across the ground and stole the second - a clearly visible; 'Reason' ... then finally a ferocious Chimera appeared and gnashed at the third foggy formation; 'Revolution' ... This was a clear sign ... a vision ... the name we had been searching for ... PURE REASON REVOLUTION."

| Silversun Pickups | "Carnavas" (producer: Dave Cooley; Hear here) | (Dangerbird, July 25, 2006) |
BTW: When it came to divvying up songs for its previous EP, "Pikul," and "Carnavas," Silversun Pickups singer Brian Aubert tells P&P that they were definitely saving the mightier material for the full-length album. "We knew also that the record was going to be sharper, meaner, but still holding onto the dreamier aspects of the EP," he says. "We love aggressive music, and this is a very aggressive record, but it's still pretty. ... With 'Pikul,' people cried. With 'Carnavas,' you can cry, dance, punch someone, and then make love. Sweet, sweet love ... and then cry ..." Now, about that band name: "It's a state of mind," Aubert says.

| Slow Motion Reign | "Slow Motion Reign" (producer: System of a Down's Serj Tankian, owner of Serjical Strike; first single: "Isn't It Time"; Hear here) | (Serjical Strike, July 25, 2006) |
BTW: "We want to bring a new music experience to the audience and to bring love and compassion to each other," Slow Motion Reign keyboardist Erwin Khachikian tells P&P. "The songs are basically ones that have moved us musically and have taken us to another level of consciousness ... another dimension. It made sense to share it with the rest of the world. That's the reason we recorded them."
Khachikian says Tankian made it a pleasant four months in the studio. "He really made us feel comfortable creatively. There was mutual respect for one another which worked out well for the project. It was nice to see him in the producer's chair, although at times he had to wear a different hat, him being the label president and the producer. Most importantly, he wore the friend's hat. I am sure it was a challenge for him to keep up with all these important roles. Overall, the album speaks for itself, and it brings out the best of Serj's talent and the band's talent put together."
