BTW: What exactly is the significance of Indigo Girls' album title, "Poseidon and the Bitter Bug"?

Amy Ray explains.

"Actually, the producer, Mitchell Froom, came up with it as kind of a joke about how dark some of the lyrics were," she tells P&P. "It has an image from one of my songs ('The Bitter Bug' from 'Second Time Around') and from one of Emily's ('Poseidon' from 'Fleet of Hope'). We thought it worked because the record seemed to reflect something about coming out from trying times. The bitter bug is a dastardly little creature that can get under the skin of any good optimist. According to one dictionary, 'Poseidon is the god of the sea, earthquakes, and horse ... ."

Ray says she wanted to be present for every moment of the album's creation.

"On the technical side, I wanted to get all my lead vocals done live with the band. I did that," she says. "I wanted Mitchell Froom to be part of the band during recording, so that we had the keys playing while we put the songs down. He did this, and for me, it made a huge difference to have him in the room."

After nearly 20 years with Epic Records and two with Hollywood, Indigo Girls found themselves without a label. "Well, I did a happy dance when I found out we were dropped," Ray says. "I can't think of a better situation to be in right now. It's been a long time coming."
