BTW: No doubt, one listen to The Heavy Blinkers and you'll hear hints of "Pet Sounds," the definitive Beach Boys that was released 40 years ago next month. Jason MacIsaac, lead singer-songwriter for the seven-member band from Halifax, tells P&P that he bought "Pet Sounds" when he was 20 "and it completely made me re-evaluate everything that I was doing musically. While my colleagues were falling deeper and deeper under the spell of Kurt Cobain, I became immersed in a world of prepared piano, strings, harmony, reverb, bizarre chordal voicing etc., etc. My songwriting and productions started developing by leaps and bounds when I started studying that album." Other than The Heavy Blinkers, are there any other bands dabbling in this kind of melodicism? "There are a handful of original groups that get it right," MacIsaac says. "Artists like the high llamas, Stereolab or Super Furry Animals use the 'Pet Sounds' aesthetic, but not necessarily the sounds. There is nothing I like less than hearing an album and saying 'Pet Sounds' within the first 10 seconds of the album having started."
