BTW: Hickman tells P&P that the double-disc "Motherlode" started with the song "Living in Quiet Desperation."

"I was sitting at the piano one day, thinking about the words and feelings coming out of my mouth, how I felt like just a 'mom' who had a 'dream' and feeling blue," she says, "then I realized I'm either really euphoric about my life, my family, my gifts ... or the other extreme: overwhelmed and shocked by the state of the world, how people treat one another, in particular how women and children are treated. And so I thought, 'Why not make a recording that shows these two sides, and allow the listener to choose their mood - upbeat or sad - and pop in the disc of music to match the mood?'

"I wanted to talk about how I'm a woman in my 40s," she says. "I've been making music all my life, how I'm a mother/lover/wife/humanitarian. I guess I wanted to return to adult music because I felt a calling to express all the sides of being this woman now, and how I hear a lot of similar comments from other women." Read more

Counting Crows"New Amsterdam Live Heineken Music Hall Feb 6 2003" (Geffen, June 20, 2006)

BTW: For Counting Crows guitarist David Immergluck, the Heineken Music Hall show in 2003 stood out. "First off, it was early days with our new drummer, Jim Bogios, and everyone was buzzing off the burst of fresh energy he brought to the band," he tells P&P. "You can hear it in the recordings (check 'Hard Candy'!). Also, I seem to remember having some excellent people hanging out with us backstage. I believe we met the Dutch band Bløf (with whom we've since enjoyed a fab working and social relationship) over that three-night stand. Solomon Burke's band checked in as well - always a gas!"

Along with touring with Goo Goo Dolls this summer, the Crows have plenty on their collective plate. "Aside from putting together this live CD, we've been working on a new studio album in Manhattan for the past month," Immergluck says. "Riding the subway to work every day, just another freak with a bindi on his forehead, you know I LOVE it! We're going to get back to it after the tour with the Goo Goos, maybe on the West Coast. There's also been talk of recording with a symphony in London, but I'll believe that when I see it .. you'll have to go to a fortune teller to find out when this stuff actually comes out. Other than that, to quote Andrew Loog Oldham, we remain 'happy to be part of the industry of human happiness!' "
