"Tipping Point" (first two singles: "California" and "And Then I'm Gone"; Hear here) |
(Listen/Megaforce, Feb. 20, 2007) | BTW: Cringe lead singer John Cusimano is the husband of cooking maven Rachael Ray and Shawn Pelton is a veteran drummer from "Saturday Night Live."
"With 'Tipping Point,' we wanted to record our own version of a classic rock record ...," Cusimano tells P&P, "an album that you listen to straight through from beginning to end; an album where every song is mighty and has heft, with lyrics that attack issues both personal and political; an album that sounds like a rock band playing a big live rock show.
"Around the time we were planning to record 'Tipping Point,' we were listening to a lot of classic rock albums on vinyl - The Who, The Beatles, the Stones, Hendrix, Pink Floyd, etc. The thing that struck us about those recordings was how, without the benefit of computers or digital effects, they simply sounded better than rock music recorded today. For 'Tipping Point,' we felt we had a strong set of songs and wanted that classic rock record sound - the analog warmth without the life compressed, digitized and squished out of it."
With that in mind, Cusimano says they tried to turn back the hands of time, to "the mid-'70s, using only technology that was available then. That meant no computers, no Pro-Tools, and no digital effects. That also meant recording and mixing the entire album on tape (two 24-track Studers), using a vintage recording console (a Neve 8068) and all vintage guitars, basses, keyboards and effects.
"While some of the tracks are more lush (we recorded a full 28-piece string section on 'And Then I'm Gone'), and some of them more raw and punk rock ('California,' 'Undone'), what underlies all of 'Tipping Point' is the sound of four guys playing live, loud, and from the heart."

"There ... I Said It!" (producer: John Deaderick; Hear here) |
(Cedar Creek Music, Feb. 20, 2007) |
BTW: The buzz is quickly building for Womack's fourth studio album, his first since a nervous breakdown four years ago forced him to step aside. Does the former Government Cheese and Bis-quits singer-songwriter wonder, "Why now? Why didn't success happen for me before?"
"It never happened before because I never before had turned the focus of my lens on myself like I have this time," he tells P&P. "Until this record, all my songs had been about invented characters, or funny stories or amusing situations; this time, I wrote about myself and why I'm so depressed and so scared. In so doing, I gave voice to things that so many people feel and think about their own selves. I'd never written about myself like this before because I didn't think anyone would be interested, but it turns out that it's the most interesting side of me I've ever shown."
