"Koala Motel" (producers: Dusty Wakeman, McCue; guests: Heart's Nancy Wilson, Lucinda Williams, John Doe, Jim Lauderdale; Hear here; Read here) |
(Messenger, Sept. 19, 2006) | BTW: McCue tells P&P that she wanted "Koala Motel" to be a progression from her last album, "Roll." She and band mates Wakeman (bass), drummer Dave Raven and keyboardist Carl Byron "had played quite a few gigs together since then and we had played some of the new songs already in the live setting," she says. "Carl was there playing keyboards from the word go this time so we jammed more as a four-piece. I wanted to expand a bit on the arrangements this time as we had kept things fairly bare on 'Roll.' "
As for getting the star power, she says: "The songs were mostly done so there wasn't any pressure or anything and they each had the full palette to listen to and play off, so a good time was had by all. Also, Dusty Wakeman (co-producer, studio owner) knows how to get the good vibes going. He and Lucinda go back to when they worked together on her first eponymously titled album. John Doe is a really friendly guy and we had a beer afterwards to celebrate. Nancy Wilson is one of the sweetest people you will ever meet and a great musician. Those Wilson sisters just love playing music - that's their raison d'etre so it's great to have those vibes around and on the record. Doug Pettibone played the last recorded notes on the record - pedal steel for the song 'Shivers.' Doug is a real sweetie-pie."
