(Undertow, April 17, 2007) | BTW: It has been five years between albums for Dolly Varden. Why the long time? Singer-guitarist Steve Dawson tells P&P that the band, which includes wife Diane Christiansen, needed a hiatus after constant touring.
"At first, the goal was just to play together again," he says. "After touring the U.S. for 'Forgiven Now' in 2002, and a very rough U.K. tour just after Sept. 11 (2001), we were exhausted. We decided to take a break. No hard feelings or anything - we'd just been at it for eight years and needed to be away from the band to pursue other things."
In the interim, Dawson and Christiansen cut a duets album; guitarist Mark Balletto did a solo album, and Dawson did a solo of his own.
"Dolly Varden got back together in 2004 to have fun and try out some new songs I'd written," he says. "It felt great, so we kept doing it once a month or so with no real goal. We sounded tougher than before, to me at least. I started writing songs with a little more edge to them and we started recording them. The more we got together the better it felt and the better the songs got. The goal then became to make a great album. By the mddle of last year, we had more than enough songs recorded so we picked our favorites and took them to Matt Pence to mix.
"I think the years we all spent playing together and touring, etc., have given us a sort of unspoken bond - and that when we get together to play we just know what to do, nothing needs to be discussed, even if it's a brand new song. I haven't found that with any other musicians and I've grown to really value it. So this album, for me at least, is an acknowledgement of that."
