BTW: Robert Mardo, who played guitar and drums on the album, tells P&P: "There was definitely an underlying goal during the making of this record, whether we planned it or not. Kind of an unspoken agreement between my brother, Sonny Sly and myself for all of us to deal with the weight of the world around us at the time and put all of our feelings into the music. There were many black days before and during the making of the album, and we dealt with all of them one issue at a time, one song at a time. But in a way I think the dark days helped raise the bar a little higher for us all, and helped us cope with our problems without realizing it." As for making the bold choice of covering "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone," Mardo says: "There are two ways bands cover songs: for appreciation or as a spoof. Our version of 'Papa Was a Rollin' Stone' is not a joke, that's for sure. We were told a long time ago that if you are going to cover any song, make it your own. And I think we do that. We have played this song all over the world, and the reaction is the same every time! Even in Detroit! People go nuts for it! I think our version has the same qualities that the Chili Peppers' version of Stevie Wonder's 'Higher Ground' has ... a total love for the artist, and an interesting approach to a great song."
