"The Private Spotlight" (Hear here; Read here) |
(Sky Council, Dec. 11, 2007) | BTW: "There were a few things present during the creation of the LP," White tells P&P. "I wanted to please the fans of my first album, while also introducing some slightly more sophisticated influences and textures. I wanted to have diversity and continuity in the same experience. This album has the ability to work in a variety of environments: lounging, grooving, the bedroom, the office, the gym. I want to be part of people's lifestyle, not just their music collection.
"Another goal was to really show more of my playing; I played virtually all the guitar, bass keyboards and even drums on a few tracks. I have been studying and playing these instruments most of my life and wanted to use that to give the music depth."
"The Private Spotlight" contains the final performance of flutist Cornelius Bumpus, who played saxophone for Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers. White has high praise for Bumpus, who died of a heart attack in 2004 while on a cross-country airline flight.
"Mr. Bumpus was one of the nicest, gentlest and most talented people I have ever been around. Period," White says. "Most of the material I used from our sessions were first takes. He only needed a minute or so to fully digest the heart of a track. He was also extremely mellow and humble, only mentioning Steely and the Doobies when asked. Even then, he spoke in a way that an everyday person would discuss their day job.
"We did discuss his rich past a little, but he was far more enthusiastic about getting into the sessions. Musically, I learned a great deal from him. His playing and use of scales, which were a combo of world/jazz/funk, was interstellar! His passing was a huge loss and he is very missed."
