HAPPY 10TH BIRTHDAY, PAUSE & PLAY

IIn October 1997, The Verve was singing "Urban Hymns," Mariah Carey was spreading "Butterfly," and Elton John's Diana ode "Candle in the Wind 1997" was setting records.

Oh, yeah, and Pause & Play (the music site) was born ... Oct. 1, to be exact.

P&P evolved through the years from strictly an artist-interview site to what it is today: the definitive destination for CD-release dates, at least according to Entertainment Weekly and Esquire magazine.

Help us celebrate: Give us your comments (good/bad), advice, suggestions or best regards for P&P.

Some of you may even win a free copy of "The Simpsons: Testify" and an 11-song sampler of the Rhino box set "Love Is The Song We Sing: San Francisco Nuggets 1965-1970." Winners will be chosen at random.

Send your comments to gerry@pauseandplay.com. Please provide your name or initials and your hometown.

Here's to 10 more years (and then some). God willing.

Below are greetings from some of our loyal readers - from all over the world.

"Keep up the great work, you are a wealth of info. The only suggestions would be a little deeper on the indies and pictures. I recommend you folks to everyone. Thanks for being available."

"I have found P&P to be a one-stop for all kinds of music information, trivia, and nostalgia! Gerry Galipault proves himself time and again to be spot-on with his facts, and really reliable with his reviews. P&P is a regular stop on my Web travels, and I don't hesitate to recommend it to one and all. Congratulations on the first decade, and wishing you many more! Best regards."

"I just wanted to let you guys know that I cannot live without your Website. I had heard about it through Entertainment Weekly a few years ago since I am a subscriber. There is not a day that goes by without me checking your Web site. By far the best Web site for music releases anywhere. Your site is my bible for new releases. Please continue the great job and once again, Happy Birthday!"
Scotty B.
Baltimore

"Congratulations on your 10-year anniversary! I regret that it took me nine years to find you as you have become essential weekly reading! Nobody has a larger leg up on upcoming releases than Pause & Play; and the links to articles and stores have saved me from browsing through multiple listings to get exactly what I want. I wish you the very best over the next 10 years! Now if you could only e-mail me information whenever my 10 favorite artists have updated information, that would be special!" Thanks for all you do!"
Steve Fischer
Louisville, KY

"Thank you for 10 years of a great and invaluable service! The convenience of having all new and reissue release information bundled together and delivered to our inbox saves hours of hunting and wondering when that certain CD is coming out. Plus we also may happen to run across something we normally wouldn't have thought of. So thanks again Gerry. And a toast to 10 more years!!! Happy birthday, Pause & Play. Peace."
Joebase
Wichita Falls, TX

"Great site. I am so glad I found you. I am a huge music collector and your information is invaluable to me. I need to know everything. Not to mention I found my album of the year for 2006, 'Lullaby Baxter,' from you. Whatever it takes to find great music. Cheers!"
Gene Good
Oak Park, IL

"I am a record collector located in Germany, and my comment for Pause & Play con be put in one word: INDISPENSABLE. Happy birthday and congrats for the good work."
Hans P. Huebschen

"I'm still loving it. With ICE gone and the music industry in the doldrums, P&P is the only way I can keep up on what's coming out. Bless you. Don't change a thing. Here's to 10 more (provided the CD still exists then!)."
Kevin Walsh
Emeryville, CA

"Hi Pauseandplay-Makers. Congratulations. You are simply the best. It's the worldwide best music-info-site. Thank you, I know what's going on in the music world. You don't only support the big names. There are always interesting new sound adventures to develop. I wish you all the best for the next 10 years. Sincerly yours,"
Viktor Nowak
Bronschhofen SG, Switzerland

"The savior to those of us who loved our ICE subscriptions! Thanks for your service."
Arthur
Newton, MA

"I think your service is great - there's nowhere else I can find release date information. The one thing I wish would change though is the formatting of the notification e-mails that are sent out. I use Eudora, and the e-mails display as a continuous line, as if there's an error in the HTML. Is there something I need to do to fix this? Thanks!"
Ellen Newman
Penn State University

"Man, is it really been 10 years?? Hi, my name is Yossi im from Haifa, Israel. I really happy about your birthday and would like to say that I'm pleased from your info every single day! I will keep enter your site and check for updates ... Keep up this way!! Good work!!"
Yossi

"Just wanted to send an e-mail to say good job with the Pause & Play release lists. I used to be a fan of ICE Magazine but once that went away I had no idea where to look for new releases each week. Then I found your Web site and look forward to reading the e-mail each week. Which brings me to two little points that could use improvements:
1) For some strange reason, once in about every 3 months or so I don't get an e-mail. Could be all sorts of reasons why it doesn't get to me and I just wanted to give a heads up.
2) You guys do miss some releases. I am going to assume they are small label releases, but being a huge music fan I notice when a band I like is releasing an album and it's not on your list. So maybe you can work at improving that a bit.
Otherwise, keep up the good work and I'll keep reading the e-mails/Web site!"
John
Syracuse, NY

"Congratulations! Ten years flew by and I still love Pause & Play. Ten years ago, someone posed the question 'What is the next big thing in the music industry?' I said three-disc albums would be plentiful. The biggest 'three' in the music industry became the MP3, at least the biggest change. People still buy vinyl, and I figure people like myself will still buy compact discs, but the MP3 is easy and accessible to a growing online world. I think Sheryl Crow said in the midst of the last 10 years that we are going to be buying singles a lot more. True. Every day is a winding road. Good luck in the next 10 years, I hope for the best for Pause & Play as well as a thriving music world which made a big turn."
Ken Ruinard
Anderson, SC

"I have only been subscribing to the e-mails for 4 or 5 years, but for those 4-5 years, I have turned to Pause & Play for all my music & entertainment needs. Not only does it list the new releases, but it also gives you the link to check them out yourself. I have enjoyed getting P&P's e-mails because they always let me know what I need to go get from the store for that week. Thank you for putting out such a great concept for us music lovers."
L.V.
Denver

"Thanks a lot for all your great work over the past 10 years. A couple suggestions: Can you seperate out the U.K. release dates from the main release date page? Also, any chance of a better search engine?"
Torr Leonard

"Gerry: I have been looking at your site for years. In fact, it's the first site I look at every morning. I have been collecting music since Jeremiah was a bullfrog and your site keeps me up to date on new releases and release dates of classic rock (the only rock) artists that I collect. The listing for future releases is your greatest invention. Anyway, my music brother, keep up the excellent work!!! God Bless."
Jude Miles
Maricopa, AZ

"Gerry - well, first you put ICE magazine out of business, great magazine but I always loved how I would read it and realize I read the same thing here a month before! I think your site could form the basis for the definitive music site, that I do not believe exists today. Most people go to an artists site to see what is new, your site is a trigger, but I think there needs to be a new approach beyond MySpace. I am a VP of software so I have some ideas."
Bill Cannon
Palatine, IL

"I love you your site; it's one of my two favourite bookmarks! The links to the articles and songs on the '/cdfront' page are great. I'm curious if you've kept track, but which album has been on your list longer - the new Eagles album or 'Chinese Democracy'? There's got to be some sort of award for that! Keep up the good work."
John Lewitt
Toronto

"Thank you to the person who turned me on to Pause & Play, once ICE magazine when out of business. And thank you to Pause & Play for its comprehensive list of the latest releases and reissues. Happy anniversary, and don't change a thing."
JBP
Alexandria, VA

"I used to work in the music industry (for WEA, to be exact) so I had my finger on the pulse of what was coming out. Now, without Pause & Play, I'd probably have no idea what was out there. Your site and e-mail service keep me in the game. Thanks!"
Tim Kindem
Woodbury, MN

"Your site is indispensable...especially since ICE Magazine folded last year. I think you should keep the site as simple and straight-forward as it has been, though I think you could look into adding some of what made ICE Mag such a great read. They had articles that went in-depth on album releases ... how they were mastered, recorded, etc. They also had the CD Watchdog feature, where people could write in with problems with their CDs, and ICE would go to the industry sources and get answers, and often initiate returns/swaps for proper masterings: a KEY FEATURE, since it is virtually impossible to contact quality control at the record companies, and since most stores will not accept a return on an opened CD. Short record reviews wouldn't be a bad thing either ... similar to the quick reviews in Rolling Stone, easily digestible. (Heck, I'd even volunteer to write some ... I do a weekly CD/DVD release round-up feature for FOX News Radio, and your site is probably my main reference. And, of course, any excuse to get free music, I am THERE!) And since this would cost money ... I'd definitely be willing to pay a subscription to access the extra features. So would most of the ICE refugees, I'd wager."
RM
Brooklyn, NY

"I appreciate your site even more now that ICE magazine is gone. The only thing I would add is try and have more clear lists ... dates of releases current and a few weeks past ... then put up maybe one column for tentative future releases. Love the site and thanks!"
David Casale
Ossining, NY

"I used to get ICE Magazine, which used to give release dates on CDs a month. I used to say that it was my CD bible ... I would be lost without it ... When the magazine was discontinued, I thought I would be lost. Not knowing what was coming out and when. It really upset me. But someone in my office discovered Pause & Play. You guys are the best at what you do. It's a really great web site. I hope you go on forever. Happy birthday all!!!!"
Tom Carnacchio
New York

"Just wanted to drop you a line about your site. I've been collecting CDs for over 20 years and I stumbled across your site about 8 years ago. It quickly became one of my favorite sites to visit on a daily basis. I was a record store manager and your site would give more accurate release dates then I could get from my headquarters and from the labels themselves. I've recommended your site to several people over the years and I know some of them have become regular visitors as well. So congrats on 10 years and I hope you'll be around as long as I'm still collecting. Thanks for everything."
Jim Kallenberger
Middleton, WI

"I've been visiting this site for years, and it is my only source for keeping up with what's coming out. It's comprehensive and it goes deeper to get information than any site for music I've visited. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to say thank you for creating such a wonderful site! It's a music geek's dream. Kind regards."
John K. Schneider
Chicago

"I very much appreciate this service. Not only do I use it to monitor new releases, DVDs and reissues for my own listening, I often refer my students to P&P to observe the current state of the music industry. Keep up the good work!"
Andrew Flory
Assistant Professor of Music History
Shenandoah Conservatory, Winchester, VA

"I didn't realize that P&P has had a Web site since '97. I've been a fan of music for many years and it has always been great to see what the latest artist's is releasing on your wWb site. This site has always had an extensive list. Thinking of 10-year anniversaries, I also know that this is the same year the band Hanson had their first hit with 'MMMbop' and even though they have been fighting the stigma of who they were back then they are still making great music I have remained a fan throughout these past 10 years."
S.D.
New Ulm, MN

"I'd like to wish Pause & Play a happy anniversary and many more! I always check with your list to see what is coming out so I don't miss the obscure music that is coming out, so I can remind my local retailer, City Lights, to get a copy for me. I'm not sure what I would do without your site. Thanks and many more years doing the job!"
Duane Hughes
State College, PA

"I was a longtime subscriber to the ICE newsletter and still prefer a print edition of new releases and info. I came across several sites that list new releases, but I prefer yours because it's clear and concise and I have signed up for the weekly e-mails. Do me a favor and don't follow the lead of ICE by getting too fancy, which led to its demise. Congratulations on 10 years and I hope you're here for at least another 10."
Rick Beale
Lakeland, FL

"I really appreciate Pause & Play's e-mail release news. When the publication ICE disappeared, I found P&P to be a really good replacement as far as finding upcoming release info and news. Thanks very much for providing this service. Congratulations on the first 10 years, and I hope many more to come!"
Kevin Ruppenthal
Takoma Park, MD

"I use/read your site almost daily and I'm verry happy with it, keep it up :-) Greetings."
Paul
Westervoort, The Netherlands

"I have only been subscribed for a few years but the e-mail notifications of new releases were the best thing to ever happen to my music buying during that period. So much stuff I never would have known about and missed, had it not been for the weekly updates from Pause & Play. Thanks so much!"
David
Ottawa, Canada

"I enjoy your weekly release updates. They are my lifeline to not only new releases, but also to re-releases. So keep up the good work, and I look forward to at least another 10."
Scott M.

"Since Ice magazine folded, you have become our favorite outlet for new music releases and information. Thanks!"
