"Silverlined" (producer: Joe Blaney; guests: Béla Fleck, David Hidalgo, Amy Helm, Claire Lynch; Hear here)
(Sugar Hill, July 8, 2008)
BTW: "We had some material we were excited about and as with all of our record making endeavours we attempt to achieve that magic synergy between production and vibe," Donna the Buffalo singer-fiddler Tara Nevins tells P&P. "That seems to be the hardest thing to achieve - successfully having the technical end of it all deliver the human end of it all in a very real, honest and appealing way. It's a constant challenge.
"We also decided to invite guests to take part in the music. We've done that before to a lesser degree. This time we went all out. Each song has something fresh and unpredictable for the listener. We realized after it was done that this year is our 20th anniversary. We chose 'Silverlined' as the title, appropriate to the guests and the 20 years. It all came together in a very serrendipitous way."
What's the secret to keeping it together 20 years? Simple, says Nevins: "Love, passion, and perhaps a touch of insanity."
"Fortune's Favour" (producer: Hawksley Workman; first single: "Walk on the Moon"; Hear here)
(Great Big Sea/Redeye, July 8, 2008)
BTW: "We wanted to make a record that forged new ground and forced us to write, sing and play in ways that we had not in the past," Great Big Sea singer-guitarist Alan Doyle tells P&P. "We set out to demonstrate to ourselves and others that we are still open to new musical formulas and to keep the book on GBS wide open."
What did Hawksley Workman bring to the table? "Hawksley is the most spontaneous and fearless musician I've ever met," Doyle says. "He forces everyone in the band to stop planning, reconsidering and second guessing, and to live in the moment in the studio. Every lyric, strum and cymbal hit comes from an excited place. If it feels good, do it. Think later."
