"The Earth Sings Mi Fa Mi" (producer: Matt Squire; Hear here) |
(Triple Crown, Aug. 7, 2007) | BTW: "The Earth Sings Mi Fa Mi" was written to be more of a personalized experience for the listener, the group collectively tells P&P. "After deciding to name the record, 'The Earth Sings Mi Fa Mi,' we knew the record had to feel like a reflection of the title, and personal and social topics had to come across through the lyrics as well as the music. We really paid attention to songwriting, and letting songs develop on their own. We think that helped us create a certain 'feel' that helps tie the songs together in a thematic way."
Producer Matt Squire (Panic! At the Disco, Cute Is What We Aim For, Boys Like Girls) is considered the sixth member of the band, so says the group. "He is a great friend, and a wonderful musician," they say. "He brings out your finest qualities as a musician, and captures them in the recording. With his sense of melody, he is able to help us really intertwine all of the instruments that we have available."

(Collectors' Choice, Aug. 7, 2007) | BTW: The 5th Dimension reissues campaign is really jogging the memories of members Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr.
"Of course, there's some songs we can barely remember recording," McCoo tells P&P, "and then there are things where we can remember songs like 'Orange Air,' which was on our second album that took us 16 hours to record - just trying to get a particular sound, and Bones Howe, our producer, was a stickler for pitch. We might get the vocal quality we were looking for, but there might be something a tiny bit under. Back in those days, everything had to be just so; you didn't have the equipment you do now. I think we were in the studio till about 2 or 3 in the morning, then we had to go home and pack and leave town the next day."
McCoo also recounts how the group was opening for Frank Sinatra in Las Vegas and recording an album simultaneously. "We were working out of a studio that was close to a railroad track," she says, "and we had to stop recording if a train was going by."
Otherwise, Davis says with a laugh, "people would've heard train whistles during 'Aquarius.' "
There were some songs on the albums that the group members thought should be hits but never were, Davis says, but for the most part they left the job of picking singles up to their label, Soul City.
"But we were in total agreement on one song," he says, "and that was 'Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In.' We were all unanimous; we wanted that song out and felt it would be a hit and it turned out to be the biggest song we ever had."
They knew they had to record "Aquarius" after witnessing the off-Broadway musical "Hair."
"We saw Ronnie Dyson, who was an amazing singer, this beautiful tenor voice, doing 'Aquarius,' " McCoo says, "and we all got together at intermission and said 'We have to record that song.' When we called Bones Howe and told him we wanted to record it, he said, 'You know, the song has already been released. Two or three people have already tried to have a hit with it and hadn't done anything.' We just believed that song was for us. He said, 'Let me think about it and I'll get back to you.' A couple weeks later, he called back and said 'I've got an idea. I think if we put it together with 'Let the Sun Shine In,' it might work.
"At the time, 'Let the Sun Shine In' was just a portion of a song called 'Flesh Failures.' They sang it very sadly at the end of the show, so what we did with it was totally different."
"Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In" was the top-selling song of 1969, spending six weeks at No. 1.

| Jennifer Warnes |
"Famous Blue Raincoat: 20th Anniversary Edition" (1987 album; remastered, with four bonus tracks; Read here) |
(Shout! Factory, Aug. 7, 2007) | BTW: Twenty years later, Jennifer Warnes tells P&P of "Famous Blue Raincoat," "I listen to it often and it still thrills me." No wonder, the album was a tip of the hat to Leonard Cohen, a legend she sang backup for on tours in the early 1970s. And the opening track, "First We Take Manhattan," features the late Stevie Ray Vaughan on guitar.
As for the bonus tracks on the Shout! Factory package, Warnes says:
"Of the four previously unreleased recordings we added, two were recorded at The Institute in Austin, Texas, with Mitch Watkins, Austin's 'Guitar Player of the Year' and mixed at Jackson Browne's GrooveMasters studio a few months ago.
"One of the new recordings is a live jam with a string quartet. String quartets rarely 'jam,' but this group breaks that rule with gusto and surprise.
"The fourth recording is a live concert in Europe, 1992, accompanied by a Belgian orchestra and choir. I hope the video of this audio makes it to YouTube. Twenty-thousand people were there, not an intimate home recording.
"Bernie Grundman remastered all these new recordings at the same time he remastered the old original analog tapes of'Famous Blue Raincoat.' 'Famous Blue Raincoat' had been out of print in North America since 1995. Some bootlegs and imports available on the Internet were not sounding right to me. Perhaps the manufacturers were using limiters in the transfer process, I don't know. This 20th anniversary addition is now the best version available. We also created a 24-page booklet with private photos from my personal collection. Copies may be purchased directly from jenniferwarnes.com."
So, what is Warnes up to these days? She's plotting more reissues.
"We want to provide more of my album titled 'The Well' that came out briefly in 2001 and then disappeared. Mixed by George Massenburg, mastered by Bernie Grundman, with great players: Vinnie Colaiuta, Arlo Guthrie, Doyle Bramhall, etc., 'The Well' is also appreciated by fans who love 'Famous Blue Raincoat.' As of this writing, there seems to be interest in its rerelease this year. I have other recordings that have not been released yet and I am working on those now that 'Famous Blue Raincoat' is restored and out.
"A comprehensive 'Best of' needs to be created. There's talk of a live concert TV special around 'Famous Blue Raincoat' and possible tour. There is a new Christmas duet with Canadian Michel Bérubé, lots of collaborations. Check in often at the newspage at my Web site jenniferwarnes.com for the details."
