"The Black & White Album" (first single: "Woke Up Hwite"; Hear here ; Read here )
(Ipecac Recordings, Nov. 6, 2007)
BTW: Imani Coppola may have seemingly fallen off mainstream radio's radar screen after scoring a big hit in 1997 with "Legend of a Cowgirl," but "The Black & White Album" is the eighth of her long career.
"This album was written and recorded for me and my boyfriend's entertainment," Coppola tells P&P. "We're both musicians, we're lucky to not fall into the routine of eating, fucking (or not), watching movies and going to sleep. Instead we make records to amuse ourselves. We weren't making 'The Black & White Album' to make money ... we made it to put something good out."
On her MySpace page is an apt quote: "Where YOU been?! YOU Back!"
"That is a Talib Kweli quote from his latest release," Coppola says. "I thought it was hysterical the way he said it ... the inflections in his voice made it sound like when you are asked 'Where have you been?' it's an insult ... I can identify with that ... can't quite put my finger on why ... but it's annoying to be asked that question.
"Perhaps because my journey has been so frustrating that when someone assumes I've been taking a decade off to become one with the coconuts on an island I lose my shit. Or maybe because that question to me sounds like ... 'So, you suck ... why?' Because I haven't been in your face and eardrum for the past 10 years makes me subject to a lot of harmless interrogation. And that's what I must keep in mind ... it's harmless, it's not meant to be offensive ... you simply want to know what's up.
"But if this were my debut album ... no one would give a shit where I've been for the past 10 years. And people who really want to know can look it up on Wikipedia."
