"Recollection" (Hear here) |
(Hybrid/RED, March 6, 2007) | BTW: Keyboardist Nate Wilson tells that P&P that Assembly of Dust aimed to create a timeless feel for "Recollection," "something that was up to modern standards - but still harkened back to feeling of records from the 60s or '70s that were more about the content of the songs themselves and less about bells and whistles and studio magic.
"I don't know if the 'album' as a whole is an antiquated concept, but every time we record, the biggest goal is to create something that's a cohesive unit - a record that takes you on a journey from song to song, and leaves you wanting more at the end. The biggest thing we wanted to avoid was having a listener skip over tracks - and I think we achieved that."
At least one thing sets Assembly of Dust apart from others: Wilson's use of the Hammond organ. Why is it such a neglected instrument?
"The short answer is that they are fucking heavy!" Wilson says. "The logistics of having a van and a few willing friends to help you move one makes it fairly prohibitive, which is why I feel lucky to be able to get one to gigs and recording sessions at this point in my life. But the sound has definitely stood the test of time, which is why I think they have become popular again in the last decade or so. The technology is also getting better all the time - and there are finally a few digital keyboards out there that come close enough to simulating the B3 that you don't feel like you're playing a toy on the gig. But the real thing is always better!"
