Eli Cook "Miss Blues'es Child" (Hear here) (Valley Entertainment, June 5, 2007)

BTW: The 20-year-old Cook, a blues protege from Charlottesville, Va., came by his love for blues honestly. "Growing up, my parents played a lot of blues on the stereo," he tells P&P. "We had an old record player that they used to spin vinyl on every day. The records that stood out were 'Fathers and Sons' by Muddy Waters, 'Mississippi John Hurt, Today!,' and John Lee Hooker's 'Born in Mississsipi, Raised in Tennessee.' I think these albums sort of formed the basis of who I was to become musically.

"When I was 14, my older brother started taking guitar lessons and I picked up the instrument in his absence. I wanted to learn Led Zeppelin and Metallica riffs like everyone else, but I always found that there was much more to learn from the blues, more ability to really express myself, which I find true to this day."

Cook has come a long way from playing in dive bars and church revivals. The most exciting experience of his young career is opening for the legendary B.B. King in Charlottesville. "I was admittedly a little nervous going onstage for such a large audience and at a venue as nice as the Paramount theater, but after the first song I was fine," Cook says. "I didn't get to meet B.B, but an associate of mine working at the theater did get him to autograph my guitar, so I felt pretty good about the whole thing."

Martino Conspiracy, The "Hope in Isolation" (producer: Ed Buller; Hear here) (Gladius/Aspirion, June 5, 2007)

BTW: For "Hope in Isolation," frontman Tony Martino tells P&P that the group aimed to "make an entire collection of songs where each in some way stuck to the overall theme of 'hope,' yet at the same time, make each song have a vibe and musical mood of its own. So, in a way this is really a 'concept' album for the most part. The only difference is that each component/song of the concept is a little bit different than every other component/song. It is the consistent lyrical themes throughout each song that give the album its 'conceptual' status. I wanted each song to be just as memorable as the song before it on the album, but didn't want to have 11 songs that all sounded alike."

Of all 11 cuts, the final and title track best represents the Conspiracy, he says. "Because most of the songs are about me reflecting on the negatives of my past, 'Hopeful' is about the idea of realizing that the future is right in front of me," he says. "I would say that is how I currently live my life, in that I don't dwell so much on the past anymore. That's also why I decided to make that the last song on the album. Being that it is more of a present, I wanted the listener to go out on an uplifting note."
