Roger Manning Jr. (of Jellyfish) "Catnip Dynamite" (Hear here) (Cordless, Feb. 3, 2009)

BTW: Although he knew his new album would be a time-consuming endeavor, Manning tells P&P, he wanted to deliver a seriously infectious collection of 3-5 minute pop classics but on his own terms.

"Highly contagious melodies, grooves and hooks but without overthinking the process and overediting myself," he says. "Hence, I make no apologies for what some might consider an over-the-top, self-indulgent production. My fans have always come to know my work as 'everything but the kitchen sink production but with just the right amount of taste.' Another fan gave me the greatest compliment in the world when they said, 'the best thing about Roger's music is that even when I listen to the whole CD for the 13th time I still hear new parts I've never heard before!' To me, that statement says mission accomplished and I go to bed happy at night."

Does he feel like a lone wolf out there, one of the few artists keeping power-pop alive?

"Yes, absolutely," Manning says. "Like I'm one of the only ones who cares enough to continue to evolve this genre of music. Go the extra distance with 'secret toy surprises inside,' if you will. But I don't know any other way. This is how I have always expressed myself musically. It may be the long hard road, but it's the only way I know how to get the results I desire.

"I only ever wanted to create music as inspirational as my influences musical heroes. I believe in my heart I have done this many times with many different projects. But it's ALWAYS been hard work and a challenge. None of it has been easy. And that's OK. Strangers all over the world seem to have been touched and their lives seem to have been made a little more sensational with my various musical offerings as a backdrop. Happy to help!"

Young Dubliners "Saints and Sinners" (guest: Kenny Wayne Shepherd; Hear here) (429, Feb. 3, 2009)

BTW: Lead singer/founder Keith Roberts says the Young Dubliners wanted "to go beyond where we left off on the last original album."

"In a band like ours," he tells P&P, "we feel you are only as good as your last album, so slacking off in the songwriting department because its Album No. 8 was never an option. We pushed ourselves as hard, if not harder, to deliver something people would view as an upward move for us and not just 'another album.'

"Coming up with new ideas is always a little harder each time, but as the juices starting flowing and each band member began bringing in ideas it turned from hard work to exciting creativity and then you just hang on for the ride."

Working with Kenny Wayne Shepherd was "short and sweet," Roberts says, "but proved what an ultimate pro he is.

"We set up an afternoon to record his part and he came in prepared. Set up his '60s amp, took out his well-worn guitar and let it rip. We all sat there with a massive sense of pride that one, he was here playing with us, and two, the song was ROCKIN!!!!! Wonderful guy and I hope we get to play the song live when we are in the same city."
